The Most Luxurious River Cruise Ships
Every European river ship fits the same locks. The luxurious ones use that space for fewer guests and more of everything else.

Guest Count: The Number That Matters Most
A typical modern ship on the Rhine or Danube is about 135 meters long. Lines that sell luxury put fewer people into that hull. Here is what some lines publish about their own ships:
| Ship or class | Line | Guests (per the line) | Notable features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Space-Ships (Europe) | Scenic | Up to 163 | Sun Lounge in Balcony, Junior and Royal Suites; Salt Therapy Lounge on Central Europe, South of France and Bordeaux ships |
| ms Inspire | Tauck | 130 | Twenty-two 300 sq ft Tauck Suites among 67 cabins |
| AmaVenita | AmaWaterways | 162 | Twin balconies in most staterooms, three included dining venues, heated Sun Deck pool |
| AmaSofia (spring 2026) | AmaWaterways | Up to 156 | Sun Deck pool with swim-up bar, The Chef’s Table |
| Scenic Spirit (Mekong) | Scenic | Up to 68 | Deluxe Suites with separate bedroom and lounge |
| AmaMagdalena (Colombia) | AmaWaterways | 60 | Twin balcony in every room and suite |
Guest counts come from each line’s own ship pages, checked in October 2026; lines refit ships, so confirm with us before you book.
What Luxurious Ships Do With the Extra Space
Bigger suites
Tauck says its 300-square-foot Tauck Suites are aboard every Tauck riverboat. AmaWaterways lists 300-square-foot suites on AmaVenita.
Outdoor living
Long sun decks with shade, loungers, walking tracks and, on some ships, a heated pool.
Extra venues
A second restaurant, an aft lounge, a chef’s table or a wine room.
Wellness rooms
Fitness rooms, massage and salon services; Scenic adds a Salt Therapy Lounge on several ships.
Many luxurious river cruises in Europe also add bicycles or e-bikes kept on board for guests — Scenic carries e-bikes in Europe (except Scenic Azure in Portugal), and AmaWaterways carries complimentary bikes.
Wellness and Quiet Corners
Space lets designers add the rooms that make a week feel restorative: a massage room with river views, a small gym, a hair salon, a library corner. On AmaWaterways ships the fitness room, massage services and salon are listed as standard features; Scenic’s Salt Therapy Lounge is included for all guests on the Space-Ships where it is fitted, with no need to pre-book.
Treatments are usually extra, even on all-inclusive lines — Scenic notes that a small number of wellness services and fine wines carry a charge.

How to Compare Ships Fairly
- Compare guest count against ship length — that ratio tells you more than any adjective.
- Ask how many suites the ship has and what share of cabins have a real step-out balcony.
- Check the number of restaurants and whether the alternative venue costs extra.
- Look at the ship’s build or refit year.
- Ask whether the ship “rafts” alongside others in busy ports, which can block your view.

Questions About Luxurious Ships
What is the most luxurious river cruise ship?
There is no official ranking, and lines describe their own ships in superlatives. Riverside Luxury Cruises, for instance, calls Riverside Mozart the largest and most luxurious river cruise ship on the Danube. Judge by guest count, suite size, service and inclusions rather than by labels.
Are bigger river ships less luxurious?
Not necessarily. Most European ships share the same maximum length; what differs is how many guests they carry. A full-length ship with 130 guests feels far more spacious than one with 190.
